Liberty Mutual Group and Safeco Corporation announced on April 23, 2008 that they have entered into a definitive agreement pursuant to which Liberty Mutual will acquire all outstanding shares of common stock of Safeco for $68.25 per share in cash.

At the Safeco auto insurance website, I noticed they offer discounts for Scientist, educators, Ca Medical Association Members, and...teeninsurance? That last one was most likely a typo.

Like most auto insurance sites, Safeco offers a confusing array of deductibles and coverages. Safeco doest specify deductible when you are choosing an amount on some of the drop down boxes. So you are thinking you are picking $2,500 of comprehensive coverage, when you are actually choosing the DEDUCTIBLE of $2,500 for comprehensive coverage.

Safeco Auto names their rental car coverage "Loss of Use." One nice feature, you can choose from combined limits or split limits: Split Limits provide separate liability limits for bodily injury and property damage. Combined Limits provides a single $ amount for liability limit combining bodily injury and property damage together.

Another frustrating thing about the forms, it's not clear enough that uninsured motorist coverage is not needed if you buy collision coverage. But this is common in the auto insurance world.

The rates for Safeco auto insurance, $100,000 in bodily injury and property damage, $300,000 per occurrence were in the mid range of competitors. For California State minimal auto insurance coverage, Safeco auto insurance was one of the cheapest.

We'll see how Liberty Mutual changes their rates once the purchase of Safeco is completed.
